The Teacher’s Guide is divided into four separate modules according to Phase. All four are aligned with the CAPS curriculum and contain topics, activities and assessments as identified by grade and term where relevant animal welfare.

Animal welfare is a global issue that requires action in terms of legislation, education and awareness. The modules are grounded in the philosophy of the Five Freedoms as endorsed by the World Organisation for Animal Health (2012).

The pedagogic approach throughout is that of introducing animal welfare issues in order that the learners can participate in discussions which involves them in creating a kinder more compassionate society. This in turn enhances their understanding of social and personal responsibility.

  • Animals have intrinsic value as individuals
  • Animals are sentient beings capable of suffering and experiencing pain
  • Animal protection safeguards the moral status of humans and the degeneration of human values
